Elizabeth Sugarman
Sugar Sweet Farm

“I don’t know where all the light came from, but the moment was brilliant.
I looked at this beautiful, vulnerable baby in my arms and I knew instantly that I would never go back to the law firm . . . actually, I might never set him down.”

HIDDEN TREASURES
An Encinitas Story Art Community Project
Though Elizabeth once advocated for MetLife and Bank of America as a lawyer, Elizabeth finds her advocacy work as a farmer much more fulfilling. Caring for all creatures great and small is an awesome responsibility. And sharing this love of animals and nature with others, especially children, is the greatest joy of all. Elizabeth and her children, Bubba and Sissy, run Sugar Sweet Farm and enjoy conceit the public with animals, their food, and the earth. Elizabeth home schools her two children, serves as a 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher, trains for triathlons, and plays on their Sugar Sweet Farm in Olivenhain.

Sugar Sweet Farm is an organic hobby farm in Olivenhain, which promotes the message of sustainable farming, livestock conservation, and respect for all creatures with the public. Sugar Sweet Farm began as a place to nurture the two children living on the farm and quickly grew to share its lessons with the growing Waldorf School community and beyond. Today, tours of school children and Scout groups visit the farm regularly and learn first hand about where their eggs, milk, meat and fruit come from. The farm also serves as a haven for endangered breeds of livestock like Oberhasi goats, Babydoll sheep, American Heritage turkeys and Sebastopol geese.

Farm Cathedral
Picture
I honor Elizabeth Sugarman with Farm Cathedral, an artistic representation of the sacred space she has created for her family and the community.
The concept was inspired when I found in my garage a hand-tooled wooden relic my parents got years ago in Italy. Ah ha! A shrine from the past enhanced to represent the Sacredness of the Sugarman’s farm today.
I loved the parallel of DeVinci’s iconic drawing of mother/daughter/child with the portrait if Elizabeth and her daughter, Sissy. The cathedral doors open to reveal the richness of life and family at Sugar Sweet Farm.

The silver dollar coins represent the valuable experience the farm provides both the Sugarman family and local children who visit the farm to enjoy the animals and learn all aspects f a family farm. The coins with red edges represent the endangered species raised on the farm. The Susan B Anthony coins represent the children at play among the animals. The gardens and orchards surround and embrace the farm.
