Cruise Night
“I picked up the phone. It was Dody Crawford. I didn't know her too well at the time. She said she needed someone that understood and could handle the car culture to help out with Rods and Woodies. She reminded me about Tom, the volunteer who had died suddenly in a motorcycle accident over a month before. She explained she needed someone to take his place coordinating it for a while.

I immediately realized, once I got off the phone and began to get involved: This could not be the end! I decided, not only did I want to help keep it alive I wanted to see if I could revive it.”

Doug Jones! Doug has saved the day more times than any of us can count. If you need someone to help ignite and revive your organization just before it’s too late, call Doug. From the time when he was twenty-two and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge on his motorcycle and realized he had to do something to help clean up a massive oil spill in “his” beautiful bay, he has been stepping in where needed to ensure his community’s quality of life.

Well, actually it all started when he was very small. It is just in his blood. Encinitas is fortunate to have his efforts at our disposal. CERT, Y's Men and Cruise Night are just a few of the causes we honored him for.

Doug is an amazing man in so many ways, and his story is far from linear. What I took from his story were themes that appear frequently: resilience, rebirth, coordination, communication. I designed a set if symbols to represent the themes I found in Doug’s story, and produced a set of branding irons based on those symbols. I chose this from of physicality and permanence, which I believe are in keeping with the story.
