| Legacies: The Youth/Elder Story Art
Project |
| Mission Statement |
|
It is the great task of Elders to pass on the fruits of their accumulated life
lessons to younger generations. A mature society therefore honors its elders by
establishing a way for them to share their wisdom. Without this rite of
passage, we continue to stumble again and again over ordinary obstacles life
presents to us, as well as waist our fore parents' hard earned knowing without
even noticing we are doing so. |
|
Legacies: Youth/Elder Story Art Projects pair Youth and Elders to provide an
avenue for Elders' to pass on their life stories. The Youth then create book
art works, based on those stories, which are exhibited regionally. The result
is an investment of our older citizen's rich life experiences in our youth's
budding creativity, as well as a rewarding and enriching, life-long friendship
for both the Elder and the Youth, which the entire community benefits from.
|
| Project Design |
Legacies bring together 20 pairs of Youth and Elders in a series
of workshops. Youth interview the Elders in their homes, and create collage art
books during 4 Saturday workshops, based on the Elder's stories. The art books
are then displayed in a community-wide Exhibit with a celebratory Reading of
the Elder's stories. These art works and collected stories are also available
to be showcased in traveling mini Readings and Exhibits at local and regional
community venues.
Our Encinitas project also featured a website of the projects. You can visit
the site by clicking on the image to the right.
