“ When my dad was about fifteen years old in Italy he joined the underground resistance against Mussolini.
I remember him telling me the story about how he rode his bicycle in the middle of the night to deliver bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables and other local food to the soldiers hiding in the mountains. During this project I realized I had followed in his footsteps.”

HIDDEN TREASURES
An Encinitas Story Art Community Project
Anne Heyligers is a first-generation Italian from the East Coast who came to California in her twenties, where she met and married Harry with the intention of raising a large family. However, that didn’t turn out to be their fate and instead, after seven years of she and Harry owning and running two local restaurants, Anne has become the volunteer director of the Food Pantry at St. Andrews Church, where she helps a handful of volunteers from the local community feed 75-plus families weekly.

Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m., the Food Pantry sets up a supermarket-style grocery store to serve the community. Fresh produce, meat, canned goods, rice, beans, baby food, etc. is available to anyone in need.

I have been drawing and painting people ever since I can remember. I love to tell stories through the portraits I create. I’ve won art scholarships, awards and solo shows during college and fully intended fine art to be my life’s work. But when I started a family I made that my priority, always knowing I’d return to my art. I participate in the Encinitas annual Arts Alive Banner program each year, depicting historical figures who have had some connection to Encinitas. Now that i have retired, the joy of creation is back in my life.

Anne’s Path to Family

With a beautiful accordion antique family photo album as my project’s frame work, I was inspired to illustrate Anne’s life story using sepia ink washes and colored pencil.
