Founder's Message
In January of 1990, I brought together a group of 31 women in an all day journal writing retreat in La Jolla. Unbeknownst to us at the time, this project was seeded that day.
As a result of that first retreat, Storymakers, which we named ourselves, still meets monthly, as well as holds an annual retreat. Out of our commitment to write honestly, listen deeply and support each other's vision of our lives, StoryArts, Inc. was born, with the expressed dream of creating a Youth/Elder project. Legacies is that project.
And now, as you read our Elder's stories you will understand why we felt so called to create a project that would pass them on to the younger generations. And once you then look through the Project Pages of this publication and see the art works that the Youth created, you will see, as we did when they were making them, why this project was extremely important to produce. Not only do our Elders have life-giving lessons to pass onto our Youth, our Youth honored our Elders beyond anything we could have perceived, in all our dreaming!
And that is only the beginning. As you look through this website, please remember the audience Legacies was ultimately created for has not even been born yet. And so, from everyone involved in this project -from our project participants, donors, school, city and county personnel, to our local historical and arts organization-we would like to give you, in future-generations, this, our community's most precious gift, our Elder's life stories and the fruits of our Youth's budding creativity.
